I loved the sturdiness of this bag. The entire thing is double lined with fully waterproof materials: outside it features 410 gsm canvas, and inside there’s 600 gsm PVC. Both fabrics are easy to clean, particularly the PVC inside. I placed some rubbish inside during testing and after a few hours’ drive, cleaning it up was a breeze.

The high-quality materials continue in the rest of the bag. Crashpad’s Stealth MK2 wheel bag is attached to your wheel with sturdy metal buckles. Your gear won’t go anywhere once strapped in!

I was happy with the choice of materials, so I’m giving this bag 5 out of 5 in this category.

This spare wheel bag is probably one of the most stylish options out there. Instead of just being a functional add-on, this one actually looks sharp. The Crashpad Stealth MK2 spare wheel bag has a large main body and an upper closure section with cool eye-shaped accents. It definitely jazzed up my spare wheel!

As far as storage goes, this one goes beyond the plain main compartment. There’s a zippered front pouch, and the main compartment has a removable internal divider to keep everything well organised. The full bag closes thanks to two sturdy metal buckles, which I found easy to use yet durable.

All in all, I really liked the design and functionality of the bag, so I’m giving it 5 out of 5 in this category.

As I mentioned before, the entire bag is fully double lined, which makes it quite sturdy. The outside is made in 410 gsm hard-coated waterproof canvas, perfect for year-round outdoor adventures. On the inside, things keep looking good: the PVC lining is easy to wipe or hose down, and it won’t get damaged by water. I personally liked the small eyelet at the bottom for easier cleaning and draining.

Not to be confused with the smaller Kings Spare Wheel bag, the “premium” version has a few extra features. Here’s what you should know about it:

Materials 2/5

Kings premium version is made from 400GSM PVC, an extra-lightweight PVC material that’s fairly tough while still being waterproof. This versatile bag is also double-lined at the bottom and lower wall. We packed this one up with a mix of wet gear, muddy boots and some heavy tools just to test the material, and it worked well, the tools were started to stress the material though so I wouldn’t recommend keeping them in there.

To fix this pack to the spare wheel, two sturdy buckles are looped with seatbelt-type polyester. Overall, the quality of the materials is good enough, particularly at this price point. We’re giving this bag 2 out of 5.

Design 2/5

This medium—sized 48L bag has one main compartment and two side pockets. The roomy 42L main section opens at the top with a sturdy covered zipper and features a stainless-steel mesh drain that made cleaning incredibly fast. If you don’t have big lumps of mud inside the bag, the little mesh hole is handy to flush out excess water.

The two side pockets are obviously smaller, but still generous enough to fit everything we needed. We really liked that they’re made from breathable mesh so our stuff dried up in no time, and the buckled tops ensure nothing flies away during a ride.

The body of the bag has a great design, particularly for the size. The buckles to attach the pack are easy to use but the actual attachment system might not do well on a bumpy road. We had no complaints when testing, but be careful on long trips. Because of the less-sturdy attachment system, we’re taking off 3 stars off this category.

Durability 2/5

As most spare wheel bags, this one has a flat bottom but, unlike many, the Kings Premium is double-lined in the bottom AND lower back panel. I liked the extra sturdiness of the bottom, although it would have been nicer to have the double lining all around. When storing heavy gear (or extra wet boots), the bag held up nicely.

After trying out this spare wheel bag and taking it out on the road, we’re satisfied with its durability. We tried packing, riding and unpacking, and our bag had a few scratches that could become a problem with more long-term use. Compared to other high-end spare wheel bags out there, this one is definitely flimsier. While this might be fine if you’re a weekend warrior if you’re into serious off-road adventuring, we’re not sure if the Kings Premium would hold up.

While this is a great choice for the price, the material could have been lined all around the main compartment to improve sturdiness. We’re taking off 3 stars from this category.

The entire bag is made from polyester canvas, which is definitely a more lightweight choice than other spare bags in the market. However, for the size and price, it’s not too bad. Polyester canvas is basically woven plastic fibres, so it is sturdy enough for casual trips to the beach or long weekends away. However, the canvas will likely suffer if you intend to carry heavy or very wet gear.

After trying this bag out, the bag itself worked great for our purposes although I had some issues with the strap attaching to the spare wheel. The straps feel nice, but they are so soft that they tend to slip through the buckles. For a bag that’s supposed to hold on tight to a spare wheel, slippery straps are a no-go. I ended up tying them in a knot to secure them. It wasn’t ideal and I wouldn’t do a long road trip with that setup.

Because of the strap issue, I’m taking off 3 stars.

Design 2.5/5

Overall, this bag keeps it simple and it works. There is a single main compartment that offers 45L, enough for short trips and some gear. The main compartment can be accessed through a top zipper that’s covered to give some water protection.

As for the attachment system itself, it’s simple enough that most people will be able to adjust it and remove it with ease. However, the straps that constantly get too long are a big turn-off. If you don’t mind knotting the straps to secure the bag, it’s OK and the bag keeps in place.

We’re taking off 2.5 stars because of this oversight: we’d rather have straps that didn’t slip.

This bag is sturdier than a regular backpack, but definitely flimsier than high-end spare wheel bags. For the price, this is understandable, although we would have liked to see at least double lining on the bottom.
The rest of the bag felt sturdy enough, and I had no issue with zippers and buckles. However, there are several online reviews complaining about buckles breaking for no reason, even on the first day of use. Because of these details, we’re taking off 3 stars.

If you’re not using the XTM spare wheel bag to store rubbish, this one might be a good extra backpack to bring your gear in. It has a relatively small size, so it could work in a pinch to carry more stuff. Of course, it won’t be as comfortable as a hiking pack, but it can be enough to set up camp or walk a few minutes.

For the price, we liked the XTM spare wheel bag. The bag itself was sturdy for rubbish and light gear, but I had some issues with the straps. Since the slipping can be easily fixed, it wasn’t a huge problem. However, I’m wary about the attachment system for longer road trips.

Although the manufacturer doesn’t clearly specify the outside material, at the touch this bag seems to have an outside thick canvas. The inside of the bag is fully lined in PVC, which is sturdy and easy to clean. It would have been nicer to know the exact type of PVC, as other brands usually share the specific gsm to show durability.

The entire underside is made of mesh, which feels sturdy enough to handle rubbish and wet gear.

The buckles and zippers are all plastic, and feel slightly thinner compared to the plastic attachments on than other bags I’ve tested. While the materials are OK, it would have been nice to have a fully waterproof outside and sturdier main buckles, so I’m giving the Navigator 2.5 out of 5 in this category.

This bag is all about staying efficient yet compact. As one of the smallest spare wheel bags I’ve reviewed, I think design plays an even bigger role in making it useful.

This bag has one main compartment that opens from above with a drawcord, and the entire base is made in mesh for unparalleled ventilation. I liked the extra security of the drawcord, and knowing neither my gear nor any rubbish I store will get out.

On top of the main compartment, there’s also a roomy front pocket with a zipper closure and a smaller zippered pocket on the top lid. Adding to the extra storage space, the Navigator also features two small elasticised side pockets and a small D-ring to hang odd items. The entire bag closes with two sturdy plastic buckles.

Although a small sized bag, I found the space provided adequate. Of course, I only used this one during short day trips, but the different pockets made it easy to keep gear and rubbish separated.

Overall, I liked this bag’s design, so it gets 3 out of 5 in this category.

Durability 3/5

For its price, this bag didn’t feel as rugged as other models I’ve tested. The canvas exterior doesn’t seem to be waterproof, only water-resistant. I would have liked to see a sturdier material chosen, that could at least keep gear dry if need be.

The PVC interior held up great, but I had some issues with the zippers and drawstring. The cord seemed to stretch out a bit too much, so I’d guess after constant use this might not provide a neat closure. The zippers worked OK, but they didn’t glide as easily or felt as sturdy as some of the others I’ve tried.

The weakest part for me was the mesh underside. Although Navigator claims the mesh is very durable, it didn’t feel particularly thick. Keep this in mind if you want to store wet and/or heavy gear inside this bag.

Overall, this bag does OK in the durability category, but I’m not sure this is a lifetime investment.

Versatility 3.5/5

I really liked the pocket disposition of this bag. Although the smaller capacity does make taking this one on longer trips more difficult, the extra pockets offered plenty of nooks to store odds and ends.

Personally, I used the main compartment for litter and the smaller pockets to store part of my gear. Because the different spaces are well separated, there was no fear of my stuff getting mixed with rubbish.

I’ll give this bag 3.5 out of 5, mainly because the small capacity limits its use on longer trips.

In spite of its smaller size and materials chosen, the price of this bag is on-par with larger competitors. At this price-tag, I’d expect more clarity on the materials used, full waterproof ability and a larger size overall.

Tuff Terrain Rear Wheel Bag V2 Review

Unlike most bags I’ve reviewed, which are made in canvas and PVC, the Tuff Terrain rear wheel bag V2 is made in 1680D Oxford fabric. This is a double-strand Oxford cloth that’s strong and abrasion-resistant. The cloth is not fully waterproof, but it is water resistant [1]. If you’re storing rubbish, this will probably not be an issue. I appreciate the addition of a thick reflective strip to improve nighttime visibility.

The attachment itself looks good, and I had no issues with slipping. Overall, I liked the materials in the Tuff Terrain, so it gets 3 out of 5.

Design 3/5

This bag has a single large compartment with a top lid and two smaller side pockets. All compartments (the main large one and the side pockets) feature zipper closure, so you can be sure nothing is getting out, even if you’re roughing it on the road. I liked the overall structure of the bag, and the side pockets come in handy to store small items.

It’s worth noting this is the V2 version of the Tuff Terrain rear wheel bag. In a previous review, I mentioned the lack of drainage holes as a big issue with this bag. Drainage holes allow moisture to escape, and when you’re storing less-than-clean rubbish, it WILL leak. The lack of drainage holes also made cleaning the bag a hassle.

However, the Tuff Terrain V2 has an extra zipper at the bottom to easily empty out the bag AND a drainage hole to make clean-up a breeze. This new version also has a centre buckle on the attachment system to prevent slipping and fit wheels up to 37”. I’d say these are great improvements, and because of it, I’m giving this bag 3 out of 5.

Durability 3/5

This bag looks and feels sturdy enough to withstand some wear and tear. The overall construction of the bag looks good, no threads were loose and it easily fit all my rubbish.

The Oxford cloth is double-weaved, so it can handle some scratches without ripping apart. However, while the lack of PVC lining makes the entire bag lighter and easier to carry around, it does sacrifice some durability.

The Tuff Terrain easily handled my tests, but I’d be surprised if this one could last longer than thicker PVC-lined competitors we’ve tried before. Because of this, I’m taking off 2 stars.

Versatility 3.5/5

The size is good for longer trips, and I think it’s enough to keep your rubbish neatly stored until your next pit stop. The roomy side pockets are useful for smaller items, although I personally only stashed some rope in there.

I liked that this new version of the Tuff Terrain can fit wheels up to 37”, which will have most people covered. This one appears to be constructed mainly as a rubbish bag, since there isn’t an internal divider.

Overall, this bag is versatile enough if you’re looking for a rubbish-only spare wheel bag. I’m giving this bag 3.5 out of 5 in this category.

Price 3/5

Compared with other spare wheel bags we’ve reviewed, the Tuff Terrain rear wheel bag V2 is firmly in the mid-range. It’s not the cheapest out there, and the thick materials show it. However, it’s also not the most expensive or with the most features.

I’d say the price is ok for what you get, but at this price point, I would have liked to see the bag being fully waterproof. I’d highly recommend waiting for a discount (which is frequent) if you’d like to get this bag.

I’m giving this bag 3 out of 5 in this category.

Do not buy if…

While this can be a good option for many, keep looking if you:

• Want a PVC-lined bag: PVC tends to hold up better than regular coated cloth fabrics, and it’s easier to clean when rubbish spills inside the bag. The Tuff Terrain V2 only used 1680D Oxford cloth, which is water-resistant but not as smooth and sturdy as PVC.
• Are looking for inside compartments: This bag has one large inside compartment and two side pockets but no inside dividers. If you intend to carry both gear AND rubbish simultaneously, getting a bag with internal compartments might be a better idea.

My Final verdict

Overall, the Tuff Terrain rear wheel bag can be a nice addition to your outdoor adventures if you’re not necessarily looking for a PVC-lined interior. The capacity is generous enough for longer trips, and the improvements on the V2 version make it a much better bag than its predecessor.

If you’re happy with the price and want the spacious side pockets, then this one might be a great choice!

This bag is made in tough-as-nails materials that will keep up with your outdoor travels. On the outside, the Blacksmith features a “dynaproofed” canvas. At 370 gsm, the material feels sturdy and durable. On the inside, this bag has a heavy-duty 680 gsm PVC lining. When cleaning, the mud and gunk easily slipped away after a good hose-down.

Beyond the actual fabrics used, I really appreciated the sturdiness of the rest of the materials. For example, the front D-rings on the flap are stainless steel and 6 mm thick. After tying extra bin bags and a pair of dirty boots from them, I was thrilled to have this handy feature. The D-rings are very useful  in case I need to expand my storage even further.

Because of this, I’m giving bag brand 5 out of 5.

Design 4/5

At 60 L capacity, this is a generous addition to your vehicle storage. The main pocket is spacious, and the entire bag (including the upper flap) is fully lined in PVC. The smooth waterproof lining made cleaning rubbish a simple, fast task.

The main storage compartment is undivided and closes with a large flap and two sturdy belt buckles. There are two side mesh pockets that provide extra space to store gear separate from actual rubbish. While testing this out, I used the main compartment for garbage and the side mesh pockets to keep wet and muddy gear. It worked out perfectly and the bag kept everything secure throughout the entire trip.

Although there is one eyelet, I would have liked to have an extra drain hole to make cleaning up even faster. As a final con, I had some issues fitting this bag on some wheel sizes (either at the smaller or upper end of the range). Of course, if you’re willing to do some DIY on it, it’s ok.

I’m giving this bag 4 out of 5 in this category.

I’ve already mentioned the materials used, but it’s worth noting how thick the outer shell and the lining are. For reference, 680 gsm PVC is one of the strongest and thickest linings I’ve reviewed, so you can be sure this one will stand the test of time.

This bag is actually built to withstand a tree-branch belting. Although I wasn’t able to test this specific feature, after using the bag on several trips it looks as good as new.

I have no complaints in this department, so the Blacksmith 4WD spare wheel bag gets 5 out of 5 in this category.

Versatility 3/5

This roomy bag will fit most people’s needs, considering it offers 60 L capacity. However, I would have liked to see a removable internal divider (much like the one Crash Pad offers). An internal divider would’ve made it easier to keep rubbish and gear separate, if I wanted to store them all inside the bag.

As it stands, I used the side pockets to keep gear and the main compartment for rubbish, which worked OK for my needs. I see how a divider would make this more versatile to more people, so I’m taking off 2 stars from this category.

This bag is definitely on the upper side of the price spectrum, but I’d say you get what you pay. The materials feel really sturdy, and if you get the right fit on the wheel, the Blacksmith 4WD spare wheel bag won’t budge, even on the roughest of terrain.

After trying it out on several trips, this sturdy bag looks as good as new, and the extra D-rings were a welcome addition to my storage space. I wouldn’t consider this the best bag for a first-timer, but if you know you’ll use it, take the leap.

Do not buy if…

While this is a great choice for many, keep looking if you:

• Want even more storage space: Although 60 L is pretty good, several spare bags offer upwards of 75 L extra storage space. If you’re into long road trips, a larger bag might fit your needs better.
• Have a skinny or large spare wheel: Even though this bag claims to fit all wheels from 31” to 35”, we found it doesn’t fit well in skinny tires. The same problem happened with some 35” tires. I’d recommend trying it on before committing.

Overall, I liked this bag. Compared with other models, this one offers a good amount of storage to expand to your needs, and its design makes cleaning a breeze. A good option for short trips and longer adventures alike!

The Boss Wheel Bag from Crashpad provides an easy solution to this issue. It’s a slightly larger bag designed specifically for XLarge wheels.

Design-wise, the bag is very similar to the Stealth MK2 model from Crashpad. It’s made using the same materials – 410 gsm canvas on the outside and a 600 gsm PVC lining on the inside. Looking from the outside, the main difference is the shape of the bag. While most spare wheel bags are square, this one is actually round, so it completely matches the wheel. This maximised the space inside, but also means that this bag will only fit onto 35” wheels.

In fact, the bag looks just like a backpack that goes on your spare wheel, with two straps that wrap around it. While this system was quite convenient and easy to set up, it didn’t stand the test of time, with our test case bag breaking pretty quickly.

Despite its smaller dimensions, I found this wheel pack doesn’t compromise on versatility. First of all, it was designed to accommodate most standard tyres, with a recommended maximum off-road fit of 35”.

Furthermore, there are a few very convenient features on this bag. For example, there is a secondary drawcord closure under the lid, preventing litter from escaping or helping to keep my gear extra secure. The zipped pocket on the lid was handy for storing spare garbage bags, while the front pocket with a twin-slider rubberised zipper and drainage hole let me stay organised. Underneath the front pocket, there are D-rings designed to accommodate a portable hand sanitiser, reflecting the bag’s practical design. Elasticated openings on the side pockets provide additional storage options.

Finally, the main compartment features a mesh base. While Navigator claims that the mesh is very durable, I found this to be the weakest part of the product. However, it does provide excellent drainage and ventilation.

The ALL-TOP Overland Series Spare Tyre Trash Bag is designed for those who really need a lot of space. With a capacity of 100 L, it is bigger than most other spare wheel bags I’ve tested. And, due to the adjustable fitting mechanism, it’s suitable for all sizes of wheels, up to 40”. So, if you find that standard sizes aren’t big enough for your needs or to fit around your wheel, this is the option to try.

The bag’s exterior is made from canvas, and it’s available in three colours – grey, tan, or black. While that’s just a minor detail, it’s nice to be able to choose a colour that fits the rest of your stuff. The canvas is lined with a water-resistant layer on the inside to keep water from getting in. But, if it does get in, there are drainage holes on the bottom, which let my stuff stay dry.

The Tuff Terrain Rear Wheel Bag was specifically designed to hold rubbish, although nothing is stopping you to use it for anything you want. However, it does really work great as a rubbish bin.

Unlike some heavy-duty models which are made from canvas with a PVC lining, this bag is made from waterproof Oxford fabric. This is not as tough as the thicker canvas options, but the fabric is still very durable. As a plus, the choice of fabric makes the bag more lightweight.

The bag features a single compartment with a lid on top which is closed by a zipper. There is no drainage hole on the bottom, so storing wet gear inside is probably not the best idea. On the other hand, the fact that there are no openings means the smells from rubbish will not seep out of the bag and attract insects and wildlife.
